we dont have to wade into the river
to take mouthfuls
of blue
so blindingly distant
belonging to the time
when water was vision

the eyes of the pond swell
gone sky-blue
through sweet-flag cattail
and the wooden raft
of a child who sews
a rainbow
a shoelace
